Vintage & Classic Rods & Reels by Orvis and Other Great Makers
Don't be misled by prices for vintage and classic fly rods, reels and other tackle shown on online auctions; these are asking prices, not sale prices. Plus, minor differences can have a huge impact, both positive and negative, on a item's value. Two different rod models by the same maker can have wildly different values! Let our experts appraise your vintage or classic tackle.
From $50 wall hangers to $5000 collectibles, we have seen almost everything. Nothing surprises us anymore, except maybe the inflated values that we hear about from appraisers that are not specialists in vintage and classic fly fishing tackle. Why list an item for sale at a price that no one is ever going to pay? Let us give you a realistic value for your tackle.
Contact us for appraisals of your vintage and classic fly fishing tackle. We will prepare an appraisal that includes details of the item, period of manufacture, desirability, and potential value.
If you wish, we can also provide a no-obligation offer to purchase the item should you wish to sell it.
We may charge a small fee for our appraisals, which we will credit back to you if we end up purchasing your tackle.
Send us multiple photographs showing as much detail as possible, especially of any decals or markings. Descriptions of the item such as rod length and reel diameter are very helpful. Also provide a description of the condition as you see it. A history of the item as you know it also helpful, e.g. "My father's rod, purchased sometime in the 1960's."
Bamboo fly rods deteriorate over time, especially if they are not properly cared for. Varnish and windings deteriorate, glue lines split, ferrules become loose, and fittings corrode. Not only does this make the rod unsightly and possibly unusable, it also lowers the value of the rod.
Whether you want to proudly display your father's or grandfather's vintage or classic rod or take it out fishing, let us analyze the rod's condition and offer our expert advice as to how to proceed.
Unless your rod has severe damage we can restore it to near new condition. We can replace missing guides and deteriorated windings, restore and reset metal fittings, and replace deteriorated varnish. Both full and partial restorations are available.
